Southbrook Academy Specialists
Along with core subjects, Southbrook students in all grades have specialist classes in Spanish, Art, Music, Computer Technology and Physical Education.
Spanish Lead by an experienced Spanish teacher, our students are taught twice a week the fundamental skills of communication and are encouraged to communicate in Spanish at every level: speaking, listening, writing and reading. Using group activities, games, plays, and songs, the students are led to improve their comprehension and verbal responses. The students work on vocabulary usage related to theme-based units. Each year is a progression which builds on the skills from the previous year. The study of people and culture is essential to the study of a foreign language. The students study and celebrate important Hispanic cultural events such as El Dia de los Muertos - the Day of the Dead, Three Kings Day, and Cinco de Mayo. These events support the appreciation and understanding of the similarities and differences between cultures.
Art We begin the year by learning about the elements of art and applying that knowledge in our projects. We move on to art history as we study the biographies and artistic techniques of several famous artists. Students use a variety of media in their explorations of these different artistic styles. We end the year with a focus on child-centered projects determined by student interest.
Physical Education Classes lead by the experienced Physical Education instructor are taught in an enjoyable environment where the emphasis is on participation and involvement, not competition. Each grade has Physical Education class twice a week. Fundamental skills and movement concepts are experienced through games, creative movement and fitness activities. More complex activities and skills are introduced as the students progress through each grade level. Students are always encouraged to be positive, challenge themselves, practice skills and work together.
Computer Technology In addition to this, a mobile workstation equipped with a laptop, a sound system, DVD player, a wireless internet card and an LCD projector is ready to roll through-out the building to add high-tech to any program. Technology is also taught as a class, once a week for grades K-2, and twice a week for grades 3-6. These classes are used to develop skills, knowledge and experience with computers and devices. Grades 3-6 spend one class a week developing their keyboarding skills using an individualized software program. Using our Tech Works curriculum, all classes complete technology projects that integrate content from subjects currently studied in each grade. The TechWorks curriculum includes 14 technology concepts that are introduced, mastered and extended as students progress from grade to grade. These concepts include: general technology awareness, keyboarding, graphics, word-processing, CD-ROMS, internet, networking, multi-media, video, presentations, databases, spreadsheets, publishing and programming.
Music Southbrook students love to perform. That is because we give them many opportunities throughout the year to show us their talents. Whether it is through a talent show, a State Fair, a Recorder/Keyboard Recital, All School Holiday Sing-a-Long, or our ever so famous Southbrook Spring Concert-all Southbrook graduates are filled with confidence when they leave our school. This makes the children very happy and everyone very proud! |
